Community Service

Rotarians recognize the importance of giving back to the community. Every Rotary club and every Rotarian assumes a responsibility to find ways to improve the quality of life for those in their communities and to serve the public interest.

Orange Sunrise Rotary supports several community programs including:

In the five-county region of Southern California, two-thirds of the more than 1 million kindergarten through third-grade students are reading below grade level. Students in California rank among the lowest in the nation in reading skills.
From kindergarten through third grade, the emphasis is placed on learning to read. After this, the emphasis is on reading to learn, which means reading for understanding in all subjects.

The region has 181 school districts, over 2,000 public elementary schools in which 90 languages are spoken, and 70% of students are Limited English Proficient.

The Reading by 9 vision is that 95% of all children in Southern California will read in English at grade level by age nine.

The Los Angeles Times’ commitment to that goal is to inform, influence and galvanize the community to help children in Southern California learn to read in English at grade level by the age of nine by:

  • Shining the light on problems and solutions surrounding child illiteracy, and
  • Helping to improve children's reading skills.

The Times is partnering with Rotary International and other business, civic, education, government, media and philanthropic organizations to support child literacy initiatives. Reading by 9 partners support public awareness campaigns and information referral resources; hold book drives to collect children's books; donate new books; sponsor summer reading programs at public libraries; recruit, train and place volunteers in elementary schools; sponsor literacy workshops for principals and teachers, and more.

Orange Sunrise Rotary is proud to provide more than 1,500 new books each year to three local schools: Cambridge Elementary, West Orange Elementary and Esplanade Elementary.

Interact is Rotary International's service club for young people ages 14-18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but Interact clubs are self-governing and self-supporting.

Club membership varies greatly. Clubs can be single-gender or mixed, as well as large and small. The membership base can be drawn from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools from the same community.

Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through projects, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs. And, in the process, Interactors develop leadership skills and learn the value of hard work.

As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than 8,600 Interact clubs in some 110 countries and geographical areas, Interact has become a worldwide phenomenon.

Orange Sunrise Rotary is the proud sponsor of the El Modena High School Interact Club, which has more than 20 active members. Interact members have volunteered at the Orange County Food Bank, assisted at the YMCA and participated in the Scouting for Food program. Visit them at elmointeract.orangesunriserotary.org.

The YMCA of Orange County puts Christian principles into practice through programs that build spirit, mind, and body for all.

What the YMCA Brings to Orange County

A sense of belonging to a community, strong basic values, and feelings of high self-worth are critical for all people -- that's what the YMCA brings to Orange County. The YMCAs commitment to meeting community needs is continually demonstrated in programs ranging from child care, after-school enrichment, youth leadership and development, mentoring and tutoring, health and fitness, camping, and family support activities.

Participation in YMCA health and fitness programs offers opportunities for fellowship and community, provides a sense of well-being, self-confidence, and improved mental abilities and cognition as well as developing a healthy body. The YMCAs approach to health and wellness programming is that exercise and health education are important and should be provided for people of all ages and abilities.

Through the YMCA of Orange County's Community Services Branch, outreach programs include mentoring, tutoring and services designed to address pressing social issues such as drugs, alcohol, abused children, gang prevention and services for the developmentally disabled.

With a continuing commitment to character development in our communities, the YMCA provides a moral compass for our youth by teaching and modeling the core values of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship, the "Six Pillars of Character" as defined by the Character Counts! Coalition. All programs offered by the YMCA of Orange County focus on building character through these core values.

Orange Sunrise Rotary is proud to partner with the YMCA of Orange to present the annual Orange Plaza Car Show. Proceeds of the show fund local programs year round. Local Rotarians are also "hands on" volunteers, helping to landscape the Y’s Orange location.
